Refugees in Northern Ireland 2020-21:
Some Basic Facts
Facts about Refugees
The latest edition of our booklet, Refugees in Northern Ireland 2020-21, provides essential insights into the lives of refugees who have sought safety in our community. Initially produced in 2016 and updated annually, this resource is now available in PDF format for your convenience.
As public curiosity grows regarding who migrants are and the reasons behind their journeys, it's vital to foster a compassionate understanding of their experiences and contributions. Within Northern Ireland, many churches have stepped up to support refugees, particularly through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. These faith-based groups have provided English language classes, practical assistance, and friendship, weaving a richer community fabric that benefits both refugees and residents alike.
Considering the increasingly restrictive UK asylum policies, we find it crucial to advocate for humane treatment of all individuals seeking refuge. The recently published NI Refugee Integration Strategy (RIS)commits to “working to ensure people who are seeking protection have the opportunity to make the most of their potential, and to support them and the communities in which they make their homes.” We also consider the theme of this year's Refugee Week ‘Community as a Superpower' and we invite churches and communities to engage, listen, and collaborate with those who have first-hand experience of seeking sanctuary.
